Description
Hello! Thank you so much for purchasing the Piano Man Coat pattern. This long coat has a cool repeating motif of piano keys along the lapel. It was inspired by Elton John's fur coat, which can be seen in his biopic ("Rocketman"). This pattern is entirely made-to-measure, meaning that it will show you how to completely customize the coat (its size, width, length, etc.) based on your measurements! The pattern includes a colorwork chart and row-by-row instructions for the piano colorwork motif of the coat which can be repurposed for other projects (like a piano scarf!). The pattern also includes instructions to create the sleeves either with a ribbed hem or with a strap, for two different sleeve looks!

The pattern uses colorwork crochet techniques, such as carrying yarn as you crochet and switching color yarns throughout the pattern to create the piano key lapel. It uses other more advanced techniques like Joining-As-You-Go (JAYG), working on BLO and FLO, and working in the round, making this pattern perfect for someone with more of an intermediate-to-advanced level.

The pattern uses US crochet terms and inches, but there is an automatic conversion feature to UK crochet terms and cm.

I hope you have fun crafting this coat, and that you enjoy the pattern! If you post your projects based on the pattern on Instagram, feel free to tag me on the post (@rollingyarncrochet), I'd love to see what people make! :)

A HUGEEE thanks to all my testers! You were all amazing <3

Materials
Yarns
The number of skeins will depend on how big and long you want the coat to be and the yarn weight you use. For the example coat, I used up:

15 skeins of chunky/bulky yarn, about 1926 meters in total:
- 460 meters for the front panels
- 240 meters for the piano lapel
- 610 meters for the back panel
- 50 meters for attaching
- 140 meters for the pockets (optional)*
- 426 meters for the sleeves (213 meters per sleeve)

*If you want to use the same weight yarn as I did in the example coat, I definitely recommend making the pockets with a thinner yarn than the rest of the coat!

You can also check out the tester lookbook (included in the pattern notes) to get an idea of how much yarn you may need for different sizes and using different yarn weights.

Brand I used: Paintbox Yarn Simply Chunky, color: champagne white (302); each skein is 3.5oz, 136 meters).
3 skeins of chunky/bulky yarn, about 310 - 338 meters (the amount depends on the style of sleeves you want):
- 270 meters for the piano lapel
- 40 meters for the sleeve straps (optional)
- 68 meters or the sleeve ribbing (optional)

Brand I used: Paintbox Yarn Simply Chunky, color: pure black (301); each skein is 3.5oz, 136 meters).
Hooks
4mm crochet hook, or whichever hook you prefer for your chosen yarn weight.
Tools
A stitch marker A darning needle A pair of scissors Measuring tape
Other
4 1-inch buttons for the sleeve-cinching strap plus a needle and thread to sew them on (optional).

I used 4 buttons (2 per sleeve) to have two "levels" in which the strap could be attached for either a relaxed or cinched look. You can also use only 2 buttons if you want the sleeves to just be relaxed or cinched.
